Halloween tips for your shy child

My best friend’s little girl, Mia, who is five, is extremely shy and the thought of going door to door asking for treats on Halloween terrifies her. Her Mom doesn’t want to force the little girl to go, but at the same time doesn’t want her daughter to miss out on some Halloween fun. After talking it out over coffee we decided that there were a few things that she could do to help prepare her shy child for Halloween.
The first thing was she talked for weeks about all the wonderful costumes her daughter could choose. They sat down in front of their computer and looked on line at some children’s Halloween costumes. Being a huge Hannah Montana fan it didn’t take her long to pick out her costume. Mia was extremely excited about dressing up as her favorite star.
Instead of a security blanket, Mia has her little dog Bitsy. It was decided that Bitsy also should get a chance to go out for Halloween! Mia thought that was a pretty neat idea and was even more thrilled when her Mom told her Bitsy needed a costume too. After looking at several pet costumes, they decided on a princess outfit for the dog.
Mia was still a little nervous about all the strangers that would be dressed up, so my best friend and I bought a few Halloween wigs and masks and wore them around the house cackling like witches and running into things. Mia thought this was the funniest thing she’d ever seen and it helped her to understand that not all scary costumes have scary people in them.
