Almost three years ago now, my husband was having some serious back pain, as well as numbness and pain in his left leg and foot. After numerous trips to the doctor, X-rays, an MRI, and several trips to see a specialist, it was determined that he had a herniated disc in his lower back. The herniation was quite large and was compressing the nerves in his spinal cord that ran down into his leg and foot, causing the numbness, pain, and lack of strength.
During this period, both before and after we knew what his problem was, the Internet was a great source of information. Especially once we saw the specialist, we were able to research online and get information about lower back pain relief for disc herniations.
The herniation was too big to go away with just some physical therapy, so my husband wasn’t able to explore magnets and medicine and other methods of alternative pain relief. Because of the concern that the nerve damage could be permanent, his only option was to have surgery and get it fixed as quickly as possible. Luckily, the surgery worked and he eventually recovered most of the feeling in his left leg and foot!

Have you ever seen those reality shows where they overhaul your car with a bunch of really neat stuff? Well, I’m trying to see if I can get on one of them. I’m in the middle of shooting an audition tape talking about how much I could use some cool truck accessories.
I can see it now. They’ll take my truck away, and add some awesome fender flares. But that’s not all. They’ll also install one of those custom bed liners that protect the body of my truck. Maybe I’ll even get a new paint job to make my truck stand out on the road.
A boy can dream right? Unfortunately, I’m sure there are probably thousands of others like me trying to get on this show. The odds of me making it are probably pretty slim, but I’m going to give it my best shot.
If you could customize your car, what would you add to it? Would you put in some flat screen TVs and a banging audio system? Or would you rather them focus on the exterior of your car instead?
Well, I’ve wasted enough time on here talking about all of this. I need to get back to work filming my audition tape if I want to have a chance of being on TV!

I live in Denver, where water conservation issues tend to hit us harder than wetter parts of the country. Over the past five years, we have seen xeriscaped yards becoming much more popular.
Xeriscaping is when a yard is landscaped so that it doesn’t need to be watered. Often this means the entire yard is covered in rock or mulch, with just a few hardy plants poking through. Although mulch is softer and looks nice initially, in my experience it “travels” far too easily (i.e. gets stuck on people’s shoes and moves beyond its original boundaries). Also, mulch tends to break down over time — the mulch around our house that looked fantastic when we moved in three years ago, now looks rather crummy and unkempt.
Rock or gravel looks unfriendly and uninviting, in my opinion — unless it’s really done right. The good news is that rock beds last a lot longer than mulch. The bad news is that they are more expensive to buy and have installed.
Gravel and rock for xeriscaping needs to be run through gravel screening machines or rock screens to ensure that they are all of uniform sizes, for one thing — that is part of what gives you continuity in a xeriscaped yard. Also, they need to be visually inspected and sorted to ensure that the color is similar enough to complete the perception of continuity. A rock and gravel screener isn’t cheap, and part of this cost gets passed on to you in the landscaper’s prices. However, I do think it’s worth it in the long run, as the rock is a better investment than mulch!

I was day dreaming the other day when I started musing on what would be my ideal
Hawaii vacation package
Maui came to mind, but only because I have been fascinated by the Island since my sister and her hubby visited it a couple of years back. The pictures they’d taken while on their trip were enviably lovely. I couldn’t believe the vibrant and rich colors of the flowers and tropical birds there.
At the time, I didn’t have a job so I didn’t have the money to go.
Now, several years later and steadily employed, I can seriously muse about grabbing a hot Maui vacation rental and becoming a beachcomber for a week or two.
After settling in, I think I would go snorkeling or clam digging. I would hopefully have a few friends along for the ride and we would gather on the beach to east crab, clams and various fresh sea food by a warm fireside. Afterwards, we would just chill and enjoy a Maui sunset.
I have always wanted to go hang gliding as well, so it would be neat to find a rather picturesque mountain to hop off of and just take in the gorgeous island below me as I sailed by.
Yes, one day I plan to make Hawaii travel a part of my future-but for now, I guess I can just dare to dream…

I don’t understand parents sometimes. Isn’t it your job as a parent to do your best to keep your children out of harm’s way?
I mean, I understand the idea of trusting your children and giving them independence as they grow up, but at what point did it become acceptable to let your children own airsoft guns without proper training and supervision?
I know boys used to have bb guns, and it has been proven that they were dangerous under little supervision. My younger son wants a Tokyo Marui handgun and I promised myself I would let him have one only under strict rules.
Some parents would just buy one of the KWA guns and hand it over to their kids without a single thought. I, however, am not such a parent. I enrolled both of my sons in safety courses for real guns. I also enrolled them in supervised combat play lessons that the Paintball arena holds. I asked their instructors to give me updates on their progression as gun handlers. After one month of training I then allowed my sons to have their combat play on our large 4 acre lot in Northern New York under my supervision. Never could I have imagined having so much fun with these things!
