My dad works at a shop that works on restoring antique cars. It’s a small shop with only a handful of employees, and the owner is really cool. He has always talked about how the pay isn’t the best, but the owner really takes care of him. You know, by providing things like decent health insurance for our whole family, occasional bonuses and little stuff like giving us a frozen turkey on Thanksgiving and at Christmas.

Then one weekend my dad was out riding his motorcycle and a little old lady pulled out right in front of him. He had to be airlifted to the regional trauma center and was in critical condition for several days before he got downgraded. He is going to be able to live a fairly normal life, but they say he will never fully recover the use of his right arm and right leg.

Fortunately the medical insurance covered most of the bills. Unfortunately he didn’t have any long term disability insurance though. I had never really heard of disability insurance and I didn’t know what disability insurance companies did. Well I can tell you all about what they do now because our family has been living without any income, and now the bank is kicking us out of our house.
