Maybe you’re writing a magazine article about the work of a custom luxury home builder in Florida. Or perhaps you’re going to have a new home built and you want to find the right Florida custom home builders for the job. Whatever the reason, you need to interview one or more Florida luxury home builders and you’re not quite sure how to go about it.

Here are some tips to make that interview go smoothly:

• Learn about the builder in advance. Interviews always go more smoothly if you already know what you’re talking about so review the builder’s website and visit one or two of the places he’s built if you can.
• Organize your questions into sets. You want to learn as much as you can in a short time so you should figure out which topics need to be covered. Ask only one or two questions per topic to get a well-rounded interview. Topics may include building materials, design techniques, work experiences, pros and cons of working in Florida, etc.
• Do the interview outdoors, preferably at a site that the builder has constructed. This is Florida; enjoy the sun! And if you can see one of the properties at the same time, that’s even better.

Interviews are all more or less the same. Make sure to ask open-ended questions and listen carefully for the answers. Keep the conversation flowing but don’t dominate it. And don’t forget to get photos of the houses to go along with any articles that you’ll be writing.
