Stepping out on a limb as a business owner
Posted by freesearch78 on 03/28/09 in Business
One of the most important and most difficult things to do as a business owner is stepping out and taking a little bit of risk. When the economy is down and your numbers aren’t where they need to be, what is your first inclination? For most people, it is to shut it down and not take on any more costs. They want to crunch the numbers and make cuts. The good business people are the ones that can get things going by stepping out on that limb. They take risks and try to improve the productivity of their staff.
The worst thing that you can do, as a business owner, is get down on your staff. You need to have them working as hard as they can, especially when things get going south. How do you accomplish this? Sales incentive programs are one really good way of doing this. Instead of getting down on your people and trying to push them out, why not push them to work harder? Why not go with employee recognition measures to not only show your appreciation, but also let them know just how integral they are to your success? This will help you more than anything else.
Our Linux and Internet
Posted by freesearch78 on 03/27/09 in Technology
I didn’t think there was anything as good as high speed internet service until I tried my communication company’s wireless internet service. I was floored by the performance, and am looking to have the new feature installed in my house shortly. The major test for me was streaming a movie from one of my remote servers. I was able to do it without a hitch, and performance was maintained the full length of the movie. I was actually able to download a couple of big tar based backups from my fileserver in Dallas. It was a pretty good indication of the quality of service that my communication company offers.
Having the speed will be especially good since I’ve been doing some pretty big file transfers for my company. We have been rolling ISOs for our modified Linux distribution, and we need to be able to get the latest version to our customers as soon as possible. Now I can start making these transfers without being tethered to a wall. So, for leisure or work, I will be able to make a really good use of the service. I’ll have to look into getting the company to pay for it, or at least have them subsidize the service.
Older Webmaster Need to Brush Up on Skills
Posted by Searcher on 03/26/09 in Internet
A friend of mine that works for a San Diego SEO company recently was telling me about some of the sites that he has worked with. It amazes him how poorly that some of the sites are coded for SEO. Some of the sites he understands the poor coding as the sites are anywhere from eight to ten years old. Actually, he told me that he worked on one website that was made in 1995 and never updated past 1998. Naturally, he did a total site redesign.
He also told me that many older webmasters have no formal SEO training whatsoever. Most have read a couple of books or have tinkered around with SEO, but really never took any formal courses on the subject matter. He recommends that any webmaster that has been working for more than eight years take a SEO course. There are so many different trick and traps out there for webmasters that most books cannot cover them all.
Another option for training would be to contact larger companies that offer an SEO package to businesses. A few of those may provide training to business webmasters for a fee. This would be a great way to get some formal training.
So if you are an older webmaster, consider taking a course in SEO. It will help to make you more marketable and will improve the quality of your work for your clients.
What is an Own Occupation Definition?
Posted by FRSP on 03/25/09 in Business
Most people these days are in assumption that their employer provided group long term disability insurance would protect them indefinitely if they become disabled and cannot perform their normal occupational duties. This is a serious lack of understanding and you should take a look at the fine print in order to see that the coverage may only last for a couple of years. The term of total disability is defined differently by different disability insurance companies. Getting disability insurance quotes from a few of them would be advantageous when choosing your riders and policy.
An own occupation definition in disability means that you are unable to do the occupational tasks of your own specialty or job, but could possibly work in another place of business. If your disability insurance has the clause listed, make sure that it is not considered a modified plan. If it is a modified plan then the language will state that after a certain time period the definition of disability will be considered with any and all types of employment.
When you purchase an individual disability insurance plan instead of using the group plan that your employer provides you can take it to your next place of employment because it won’t be attached to the business. You can rest easy knowing that your disability coverage will continue even if you change occupations.
